Senator of Kenya, TIME100 Next honoree, Disability, Women and Youth Rights Advocate
Senator Crystal Asige is a nominated Senator in Kenya's 13th Parliament, representing persons with disabilities, women and youth. Named to TIME Magazine's 2024 TIME100 Next list, celebrating rising leaders making an impact in their fields, she has become one of Kenya's most influential voices on disability rights and accessibility.
As the first Senator to simultaneously represent all three special interest groups, persons with disabilities, women and youth, Asige brings lived experience to the centre of public leadership. A visually impaired leader, she has helped reshape conversations around accessibility, representation and inclusion in Kenya and beyond. She was also recognised in Forbes' inaugural Accessibility 200 list, honouring global leaders driving progress in accessibility and disability inclusion.
Recognised as Kenya's top-performing Senator for two consecutive years, she has led landmark legislation including the Persons with Disabilities Act, 2025, alongside several other Bills focused on expanding opportunity and protecting rights. She also serves as Vice Chair of the Senate Labour and Social Welfare Committee and holds leadership roles within parliamentary disability and women's caucuses.
Before entering public office, Asige worked at the BBC while building a successful career as a singer, songwriter and producer. Today, she uses music, storytelling and what she calls "edu-tainment" to challenge stereotypes and spark conversations about inclusion. Her #ByFaithNotBySight motto reflects the resilience and purpose that have shaped both her personal journey and public service.
Beyond Parliament, Asige's work extends through The Crystal Asige Foundation and global leadership networks including Harvard Law School, One Young World and the Amujae Initiative. An African Genius Award recipient and Kenyan Top 40 Under 40 honouree, she advises locally and internationally on accessibility and universal design.
