A New Generation of Mining: Embracing Transformation
Young people have a vital role to play in transforming their communities and finding new solutions to some of the greatest challenges of our time, including employment opportunities, artificial intelligence, the climate crisis, agriculture, biodiversity conservation, and the economic development of local territories. Through the stories of these three amazing young people, we hope to explore how the next generation can help shape a more responsible mining industry, strengthen social cohesion, and create new opportunities in communities that are often geographically isolated from major urban centers.

He is an international negotiator, a specialist in financial management, and the administrative manager of Grupo Empresarial Explotaciones Gold S.A.S., one of the first legally registered mines in Segovia. He is part of the leadership team at the NERUA Foundation, where he promotes initiatives focused on health, prevention, and strengthening social fabrics. His vision is for mining that fosters the development of new generations and provides opportunities for technology and innovation.

Founder at Selvitas
Colombian entrepreneur and policy strategist working to advance economic and environmental development in Latin America. He is the founder of Selvitas, a social enterprise dedicated to forest protection and storytelling through film. Currently pursuing a fully funded joint degree in Public Policy and Environmental Management at Yale University, he has worked on multilateral initiatives and serves on the board of the Latin America branch of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. He has also been recognized as an IUCN Young Changemaker, One Young World Ambassador, and U.S. Department of State Young Leader.

Diana Merchancano holds a degree in Economics from Universidad Santo Tomás, a specialization in International Business from Universidad Sergio Arboleda and Georgetown University, an MBA from IE Business School in Madrid, Spain, and has completed studies in Sustainability and Shared Value at Harvard University. With more than 17 years of experience in the mining and oil and gas sectors, Diana has built an extensive track record in developing and implementing strategies for local supplier development, shared value creation, and the adoption of circular economy models. She currently serves as Vice President of Sustainability at Aris Mining, where she has led and advanced strategic projects that create positive impact and foster the transformation of the territories where the company operates. Throughout her career, Diana has worked with leading companies in the extractive sector, serving as a strategist in the design, development, and implementation of policies and projects that generate value not only for organizations, but also for local communities.

Mining, she drives initiatives related to gender equity, the circular

company’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. She is an
ambassador for Women in Mining Colombia and has represented
this agenda on national and international stages, leveraging her
technical expertise, social leadership, and ability to transform the
industry from within.
