Antimicrobial resistance is often reduced to a simple warning: stop overusing antibiotics. The reality is far more complicated. Dr. Malcolm Miller, senior specialist in anaesthesia and critical care at Groote Schuur Hospital (Cape Town), explores how prescribing, patient behaviour, medicine quality, diagnostics and reliable access all shape the problem. Zweli Bashman has served as Country Head of Sandoz South Africa since June 2026, leading the business with a focus on sustainable growth, patient access and a high-performing culture. He brings more than 20 years of pharmaceutical experience across sub-Saharan Africa, including commercial leadership, market access, partnerships, clinical trials and manufacturing. Before joining Sandoz, he was Managing Director of MSD Sub-Saharan Africa. Zweli completed executive education at Henley Business School and Thunderbird School of Global Management, and has held several industry leadership roles. In 2023, he was named South Africa's Forty Under 40 Healthcare Category Winner.

Malcolm Miller, MD, currently works as a senior specialist in anaesthesia and critical care at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. In addition to interests in trauma, abdominal compartment syndrome and nutrition in critical illness, Dr. Miller is especially concerned with antibiotic stewardship. Dr. Miller completed his medical training at the University of Stellenbosch in 1994 and obtained the certificate in critical care medicine in 2008 through the College of Medicine of South Africa.
