This session explores the importance of ensuring Indigenous autonomy is built within our institutions, and why Indigenous knowledge must be incorporated into these systems. Discussing governance, education and healthcare, this panel coniders the deep-rooted obstacles in achieving this as well as strategies to ensure Indigenous perspectives are represented across institutions.

Hugo is a Honduran civil engineer and a prominent youth leader committed to building a more just, equitable, and inclusive country. Deeply connected to his Lenca indigenous roots, he has led impactful youth-led initiatives focused on civic engagement, leadership development, and gender-based violence prevention in western Honduras. He served as President of the Lenca Youth Movement, where he coordinated community efforts to strengthen youth leadership, promote entrepreneurship, and advocate for public policies in favor of young people. Under his leadership, formal agreements were signed with local governments to support youth development initiatives. Currently, Hugo serves as the Regional Coordinator of the Revolutionary Youth Movement of Honduras, where he supports and strengthens youth networks across Intibucá, Lempira, and Copán. He also leads the “Raíces Juveniles” project, which focuses on eradicating gender-based violence through participatory strategies. Hugo hopes to amplify the voices of rural and indigenous youth in Honduras and collaborate with global leaders to develop local solutions with global impact.

Lance Copegog is a proud Anishinaabe from Chimnissing (Beausoleil First Nation) in Ontario, Canada, part of the Williams Treaties. An Indigenous youth leader and advocate for mental health and life promotion, Indigenous governance, and the advancement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, his work ensures Indigenous voices are included in global conversations on human rights, sustainability, and community development. He has advised governments, foundations, and international organizations on youth engagement and policy, and has spoken to audiences in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Ireland on First Nations governance, reconciliation, and community development. A former Anishinabek Nation Youth Representative, Lance served 39 First Nations across Ontario from 2017 to 2025 and supported 133 First Nations communities as Youth Sector Manager with the Chiefs of Ontario.

Angela is a 22-year-old indigenous Maya Queqchi woman and weaver, an entrepreneur, and a storyteller who uses the power of audiovisual narrative to generate global dialogue and advocate for social and cultural justice. Her short films that document indigenous life, migration, and cultural resilience, have won awards at international film festivals. Angela’s was honoured as a PLURAL+ Recipient and active participant in forums of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations. This established her as an ambassador for Queqchi culture, bringing the voice of her community directly to global platforms for peace and intercultural dialogue. Angela was also selected to join the first cohort of Peacebuilders at the United States Institute of Peace in Guatemala, establishing her as a community diplomat.
